The Roy Buchanan Touch Photo Print
Among guitarists, the shy, modest spirit of Roy Buchanan still looms large, even after his untimely death in 1988 at the age of 48. Armed with his trusty Telecaster, he was known for creating some of the most unique guitar sounds ever. Guitar Player magazine lauded him for innovating one of the “50 Greatest Tones of All Time.” Coming out of a hardscrabble upbringing in the Ozarks, Buchanan worked in relative obscurity for nearly 15 years, perfecting numerous techniques (like wah-wah effects) that would later be co-opted by other guitarists. Eric Clapton noted that he was “the best in the world.” The Stones asked him to join the band (he declined). Buchanan was always far more at home in a live setting, where his soulful twists and turns kept bandmates on their toes.
Rock gods like Clapton and Jeff Beck revered Buchanan’s unusual chops – as did many jazz artists. This shot captures a moment of his singular skill. Taken at the Schaefer Music Festival, Wollman Rink, Central Park on 9/14/75.
