Eddie Van Halen was the rarest of guitar gods: both prodigiously talented and genuinely humble. For a guy who changed how the instrument is played, he never took himself overly seriously. You can see both of those qualities-- the monster chops and the simple joy --  in these rare photos of Eddie and his beloved Frankenstrat.

These were taken during the "Hide Your Sheep," "Fair Warning," "5150" and "1984" tours -- all in Detroit, Michigan.
